We’re so excited and proud to say a huge “Happy 10th Birthday!” to Girls from Oz, our official charity partner. While we can’t believe it’s been 10 years since g-oz was founded, it makes sense when we think about all they’ve achieved during that time!
g-oz was founded in 2007, based on a desire to make high quality performing arts activities and opportunities available to children and young people that may otherwise lack access to them for financial or geographical reasons. After delivering a number of successful programs between 2007 and 2009 in Australia and overseas, since 2009 g-oz has focused on working with girls and young women in remote communities such as Halls Creek, Carnarvon and Lockhart River.
Highlights and achievements include:
- Giving 81 g-oz participants the opportunity to travel on 11 trips to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney
- Of these 81 travel program participants, 89% are employed or still studying in 2017
- More than 50 AGC families have welcomed g-oz participants into their homes during travel programs
- In 2017, more than 400 participants will take part in school-based programs in Halls Creek, Carnarvon and Lockhart River
Through the performing arts, g-oz encourages girls and young women to become confident, engaged, connected members of their school and wider community. Flow-on benefits include increases in school attendance and performance, improvements in employment prospects and the development of a positive sense of cultural identity.
